Dental education/Institution started in India around 92 years back; DCI was established as a result of the Dentist Act of 1948, which was intended to regulate the dental practice and promote scientific advances. DCI is still the premier governing body of dental education of India. Now 300 plus dental colleges/university are available in India and 20000 dentists are passing out every year.
The first government dental college was started in Bangalore in 1958 with an intake of 5 students. The first private dental college was started in Manipal (Near Mangalore) in 1965. In the next 30years, there was a spurt of dental colleges in the private sector. Prior to 1996, the dental colleges of Karnataka were affiliated to various different universities in the state. With the establishment of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), all dental colleges except the two at Manipal and Mangalore came under the aegis of RGUHS. Total 47 dental colleges are available for BDS study in Karnataka. There are 13 Dental colleges available in Bangalore city and 34 dental college situated in out of Bangalore city. Out of 47 colleges 3 colleges controlled by Gov of Karnataka and 44 dental colleges are controlled by private management. Deemed college/university also included in 44 colleges. Few dental institutions are located in major cities like Mysore, Mangalore, Bijapur, Baghalgot, Belgaum, Bidar, Chithradurga, Raichur, Dhavangare etc. Current year around 4000 BDS seats and 1200 MDS seats available in Karnataka based dental colleges. Recently many of the colleges, including the Siddharta Dental College Tumkur, JSS Dental College Mysore, Yenepoya Dental College, AB Shetty Dental College, KLE dental college Belgaum, etc have come under deemed university status.
